Piscine Municipale (fransk for offentlig bad) presenterer en stedsspesifikk multisensorisk installasjon inspirert av prosjektrommets plassering «under overflaten» på Carl Berner T-banestasjon. Arkitektoniske elementer og objekter relatert til svømmebassenger har blitt fratatt deres tiltenkte funksjoner, og kun fraværet av vann gjenstår. I denne scenografien blir menneskeflyten på T-banestasjonen del av utstillingen som en rytmisk aktivering av det ellers tilsynelatende forlatte svømmebassenget. Gjennom Ballage sitt narrativ blir grensen mellom bevegelse og stillhet flytende – som vann.

Keramikk trer frem som utstillingens dominerende materiale, gjennom en kombinasjon av håndlagde fliser og resirkulert industriell murstein. Tonene i glasurpaletten skildrer grader av forfall, inspirert av havdypet og vann-slitasje. Til sammen har estetikken den hypnotiske kraften til å fremkalle en lukt av klor, som for mange fungerer som en nostalgisk lystgass. 

Gjennom den tilhørende QR-koden kan man dykke ned i en 6 minutters reise i lyd, som tilbyr en guidet visualisering i konteksten av et svømmebasseng. Ved å lytte til den enkle fortellingen appellerer Ballages verk å ta en pustepause, som demper og forvandler T-banens travle tempo til en kontemplativ ro.

Lorie Ballage (f. 1994 i Paris) har en MFA fra Kunst- og designhøgskolen i Bergen og en BFA fra The Art Academy of Dundee. Hun har lenge arbeidet med keramikkmediet i relasjon til vann, med gjennomgående temaer som sårbarhet, hverdag og fiksjon. Hun har stilt ut ved blant annet Bergen Kunsthall, KRAFT, Kunstnernes hus, Latvia Ceramic Biennale og Studio 17.

Piscine Municipale (French for public swimming pool) presents a site-specific multi-sensory installation inspired by the gallery’s underground environment. The architectural elements and objects relating to swimming pools have been deprived of their intended functions and only the absence of water remains.  In this uncanny scenography, the human flow in the subway station becomes part of the exhibition as a rhythmic activation of the otherwise seemingly abandoned swimming pool. Through a narrated fantasy, the boundary between flow and stillness, becomes fluid – like water. 

The atmosphere in Piscine Municipale reveals ceramic as the exhibition’s predominant material through a combination of hand-crafted tiles and recycled industrial bricks, whose glazed palette tones explore deterioration inspired by underwater depth and water behavior. The aesthetic has the hypnotic power to induce a scent of chlorine recalling, for many, a nostalgic intoxication.

The exhibition’s audio journey, accessible through a QR-Code, dives into a 6 minutes guided visualization set within the backdrop of a swimming pool. Through listening to this simple narration while standing present, Ballage’s piece appeals for a gentle intermission, suspending the subway’s transit tempo into a contemplative pause.

Lorie Ballage (b. 1994 in Paris) holds an MFA from the Bergen Academy of Art and Design and a BFA from the Art Academy of Dundee. She has long worked with the medium of ceramics in relation to water, with recurring themes such as failure, everyday life, and fiction. She has exhibited at, among others, Bergen Kunsthall, KRAFT, Kunstnernes hus, Studio 17 and the Mark Rothko Art Center in Latvia.
